Strategy Instruction (ERIC Digest E638)
Research studies show that some students need to be explicitly taught not only subject content, but also effective ways to learn that content. This is particularly helpful for most students with learning disabilities.
Strategy instruction teaches procedures that rely on skillful use of computation, problem-solving techniques, memory, reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension, productivity and writing. The strategy instruction proceeds stepwise and includes the following:
- Strategy description;
- Modeling of strategy use;
- Use of assisted practice time;
- Emphasis on the student's awareness of these practices; and
- Encouragement to continue strategy use.
